Did you know Marion County is known as the Horse Capital of the World? It’s true! Ocala and Marion County have more horses and ponies than any other county in the United States. Making it all the more appealing to horse lovers is the diversity of breeds and disciplines found here. From Thoroughbred races to dressage competitions to rodeo events, Marion County offers a mix of opportunities that appeal to a wide range of horse enthusiasts. Cementing its place as the Horse Capital of the World is the equine industry’s annual economic impact on the Ocala economy. According to thehorsecapital.com, the equine industry represents $2.62 billion in revenue each year.
Florida is home to some of the most prestigious Thoroughbred farms and training centers. These breeding and training farms cover more than 70,000 acres of Florida’s prime, mineral-rich pastures. Nearly 75% of Florida’s horse farms and training facilities are located near Ocala in Marion County. Over the years, Florida’s training facilities have produced:
- 50 National Champions
- 6 Kentucky Derby Winners
- 7 Preakness Stakes Winners
- 6 Belmont States Winners
- 26 Breeders’ Cup Champions
- 6 Horses of the Year
Thehorsecapital.com goes on to state, “The concentration of the Thoroughbred breeding and training industry in the Ocala/Marion County area is strongly supported by a network of equine services, such as veterinarians, feed and tack retailers, blacksmiths, equine dentists, and major horse transportation companies.” With such a large portion of the economy focused on the equine industry, it’s safe to say that Marion County has rightly earned its reputation as the Horse Capital of the World. So much so, that it makes perfect sense that Ocala was chosen as the location for the all-new, state-of-the-art World Equestrian Center.
The World Equestrian Center, which is expected to be completed in January of 2021, will reside just west of Ocala and consist of 3,200 acres. In addition to four climate-controlled indoor arenas and an outdoor stadium, the World Equestrian Center will include a 5-star luxury hotel, boutique shopping, fine dining, and recreation vehicle parking. Plans also include a residential area with approximately 2,400 new homes ranging from estate homes to condominiums.
